The film
"Freaks" while an achievement in cinematic story telling should be
rightfully considered, even today a highly controversial film. The film while
striving for accuracy by truly portraying actual people with deformities is
highly offensive due to it portraying them as monsters in more than one way.
The film presents these poor, people as they would be perceived most likely by
the public of the time, they would be looked at not as human beings because
they are different. Cleopatra deserved what she got in the end for only judging
the so-called "Freaks" for who they are on the outside or in Hans
case his inheritance. Cleopatra never got to know the real people that lay
under the skin and judged them harshly on it. The film while, entertaining
sadly conveyed the then ever present stereotype that is still present today,
different is bad by portraying the "Freaks" as essentially nothing
but horror monsters.
