Unit 3 Freaks

The film "Freaks" while an achievement in cinematic story telling should be rightfully considered, even today a highly controversial film. The film while striving for accuracy by truly portraying actual people with deformities is highly offensive due to it portraying them as monsters in more than one way. The film presents these poor, people as they would be perceived most likely by the public of the time, they would be looked at not as human beings because they are different. Cleopatra deserved what she got in the end for only judging the so-called "Freaks" for who they are on the outside or in Hans case his inheritance. Cleopatra never got to know the real people that lay under the skin and judged them harshly on it. The film while, entertaining sadly conveyed the then ever present stereotype that is still present today, different is bad by portraying the "Freaks" as essentially nothing but horror monsters.

Unit 2 and Sherlock Jr.

The types of comedy that Buster Keaton's Sherlock Jr. displays is mainly slapstick and situational comedy. An example of situational comedy is when, Keaton finds the money sorting through the trash, he finds out its an old woman's and must give it back. After Keaton does this another gentlemen comes along and finds a pile of money in the trash, of course which he gets to keep. Another example of situational comedy is when Keaton is being questioned by a family if he stole the mans watch, only to have a receipt for the watches exact value in his wallet. Another example of situational comedy is when the car, towards the end comes off its axis and floats on the lake. In terms of todays comedies people manly still do use situational comedy but I think that this has evolved since Keaton's times. Now situational comedy involves drugs, sex, some sort of violence to get a cheap laugh. In Keaton's days the comedy would be incidental occurrences that one would find comical, not involving drugs or sex, many things considered taboo in cinema, up until the mid 1900s.

Introduction about myself

Hi my name is Tyler Justice. My field of study is Fine Arts in DAAP. I have had a long relationship with film since, my childhood. I worked at a movie theatre for 4 years as my first job, and a major perk was seeing basically any movie for free. I have a wide and interesting taste in movies, my favorites are film noires from the 1940s and 1950s. My favorite actor is Humphrey Bogart and many of his movies are among my favorite films. My favorite directors are Wes Anderson, Tim Burton and Alfred Hitchcock. I hope to have a better relationship with film and expand my horizons this semester.
